The Eʋe people live mainly in Ghana, Togo, and Benin. Learning even a few words connects you to the rhythms of home.


Lesson 1: Greetings (Most Important in Eʋe Culture)

👋 Good Morning

  • “Ŋdi” (Ndee)

🌞 Good Afternoon

  • “Ŋdɔ” (Ndaw)

🌙 Good Evening

  • “Fiɛɖe ka?” (Fee-eh-deh kah?) → literally “How is the evening?”

Response:

  • “Eyi gã” (Eh-yee gah)“It’s fine / It’s great.”


Lesson 2: Everyday Courtesies

  • “Akpe” (Ahk-peh)

  • “Akpe na mi” (Ahk-peh nah mee)“Thanks to you.”

Lesson 3: Identity & Connection

🌍 Where are you from?

  • “Wòtsɔ afima?” (Wo-tsoh ah-fee-mah?)

🗣️ I am from the diaspora.

  • “Metsɔ anyigba bubu me.” (Me-tsoh ahn-yee-gbah boo-boo meh)
    → literally: “I come from another land.”

❤️ We are one people.

  • “Mìenye ame kple ame.” (Mee-nyay ah-meh kleh ah-meh)


Lesson 4: Practical for Shopping / Sharing

🛍️ How much is this?

  • “Ŋutsu aɖe ge le?” (Ngoo-tsoo ah-deh geh leh?)

💰 It’s expensive!

  • “Eyi ɖeɖe gã!” (Eh-yee deh-deh gah!)

😊 I like it.

  • “Metsɔ nu sia.” (Meh-tsoh noo see-ah)
